Field Day 2021

Field Day is ham radio’s open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio.

Objective-

To contact as many stations as possible on the 160, 80, 40, 20,15 and 10 Meter HF bands, as well as all bands 50 MHz and above, and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions.  Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2. DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit, but are not eligible to submit entries.  Each claimed contact must include contemporaneous direct initiation by the operator on both sides of the contact. Initiation of a contact may be either locally or by remote.

Temporary rule waiver: For Field Day 2021 only, Class D stations may work all other Field Day stations, including other Class D stations, for points. Field Day rule 4.6 defines Class D stations as “Home stations,” including stations operating from permanent or licensed station locations using commercial power. Class D stations ordinarily may only count contacts made with Class A, B, C, E, and F Field Day stations, but the temporary rule waiver for 2021 allows Class D stations to count contacts with other Class D stations for QSO credit.

Temporary rule waiver: For Field Day 2021, an aggregate club score will also be published, which will be the sum of all individual entries indicating a specific club (similar to the aggregate score totals used in ARRL affiliated club competitions). Ordinarily, club names are only published in the results for Class A and Class F entries, but the temporary rule waiver for 2021 allows participants from any Class to optionally include a single club name with their submitted results following Field Day. For example, if Podunk Hollow Radio Club members Becky, W1BXY, and Hiram, W1AW, both participate in 2021 Field Day — Hiram from his Class D home station, and Becky from her Class C mobile station — both can include the radio club’s name when reporting their individual results. The published results listing will include individual scores for Hiram and Becky, plus a combined score for all entries identified as Podunk Hollow Radio Club.

The Cleveland Amateur Radio Club will be activating the clubhouse for this year’s Field day.

The clubhouse is located at 560 Johnson Blvd in Cleveland TN and  will be operational on June 26th from approximately 2PM to 10 PM.

Mountain Topping, next Saturday, 19th

This is from the McMinn Co group.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Hey Everyone,

Going to go up on the mountain next Saturday.  If you want to go, the Tellico group will be leaving from Hardee’s in Tellico Plains at 9:00 am.  The Chilhowee Group will be leaving from Hardee’s in Ocoee at 9:00 am as well.

Will spot both Hardee’s on APRS in a couple of days.

It’s up to you to figure out which group you will travel with.  Jeff’s bunch in Polk County has a great time up on Chilhowee and if you live closer to that area, you are encouraged to meet up with Jeff and enjoy the day.

If you prefer the Tellico area though, we will be glad to have you come along with us.

What to bring?

That’s simple, if you think you will need it…..you better bring it!

However, some things are suggested.  It will be a warm summer day, so sun screen, lots of water, bug spray, some food.  You will be responsible for yourself….so plan accordingly.

Radios?  That’s up to you too.  We will have various different rigs set up for you to watch, operate and enjoy, but if you are a new “tech” and all you have is your handheld…..bring it!

We will be monitoring 146.490 while in route, and during the day with an hourly (on the top of the hour) voice net to check up on your well-being……and to chat a little bit too.  This net is referred to as the SAFETY, INFORMATION and DISCUSSION net or just the SID net.

Each team is asked to send a Winlink Position Report with status (either Green, Yellow or Red) and later retrieve a WL2K NEARBY USER report for potential net purposes.

Hope to see you next Saturday….or at least hear you on the radio.  If you can’t make it, listen in for us on 146.490 mhz, simplex with no PL tone

Awesome Day at the CARC Clubhouse!

Awesome day at the CARC Clubhouse!

Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, the Volunteer Examiner Team administered Amateur Radio license exams to 26 candidates. The test session was broken into separate sessions to maintain state and local social distancing guidelines. Out of the 26 candidates, 16 earned their Technician License, 7 earned their General and 2 became Amateur Extras. Congratulations to all those who earned or upgraded their ticket.

The examination process is handled by volunteer HAMs, so when you think you are ready to take the test you can take it right here in Cleveland. The Cleveland Amateur Radio Club has test sessions on the second Saturday of every month except December at 10:00AM Eastern time. Special testing sessions are occasionally approved under extenuating circumstances.

To learn more about the club and get acquainted with others who share your interest in communications, make plans to attend an upcoming meeting. Informal study sessions are held at the clubhouse each Saturday from 8AM-10AM Eastern time. Formal meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month except December at 7:00PM Eastern at the clubhouse on 560 Johnson Boulevard. It’s easy to spot – there are dozens of antennas around the building.

Tower Work Continues at the CARC

Tower work continued at the CARC Clubhouse on Saturday August 15th.  The tower and rotator for the 20-Meter beam is now complete.  Now we just need to get the antenna build and put up on the tower.
