The VHF/UHF/HF radio system will provide reliable, long-range emergency communications in disaster-affected areas where conventional infrastructure, including internet, cellular, and landline services, is unavailable. Designed for use in emergency operations centers, temporary shelters, and field locations, the system will operate independently of commercial infrastructure using batteries, generators, and solar power.
Supporting both voice and digital communications, the system will enable coordination with local and state Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs), Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES), Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) operators, and other emergency response partners. Its capabilities will support in-state, out-of-state, and, when necessary, international communications to enhance situational awareness and emergency coordination.
Funding through the VEC Shares grant program subsidized the acquisition and deployment of this equipment, strengthening local emergency preparedness and ensuring resilient communications when traditional networks fail.
